Our survey of eleven to fifteen year olds has also revealed that there are many similarities to the younger age group of six to eleven year olds in that ninety six percent of the total number of people in this category also spent most of their available time playing video games. The gender split between male and female gamers was also virtually split down the middle with fifty two percent of males and forty eight percent of females being regular gamers. The main difference between the two age groups is that unlike the six to eleven year old category the most popular form of gaming changed from PCs to console gaming. Handheld devices were the third most popular devices but there was a large increase in this age group for the use and enjoyment of interactive television with twelve percent playing games of this type daily.

Many people would think that due to this age group being required to complete more homework and activities of that nature that there would be a drop in the frequency of use for these gamers but this is not the case with ninety eight percent opting to play these games at least once a week with fifty nine percent wishing to play each and every day. We did find during this survey that unlike the younger age group many gamers of this age would much prefer to swap the living room for the comfort and privacy of their own bedroom with seventy seven percent of these gamers doing so and playing on average two hours per session. We did find however that although many within this group had decided to do most of their gaming in their bedroom that they would still be using a PC in their living room.

The thought behind this is that simulation games such as the world known franchise of Sims are still the favourite games to be played and have only just become available on the console platform. The second most popular game genre is still action and adventure with sports games coming in third place.

Although there are many similarities with the six to eleven year old age group we found that with the older group that they are much more inclined to game more than their younger counterparts with forty seven percent stating that they enjoy video games much more than many other forms of entertainment. We did see in this age group a much higher amount of people who have realized the detrimental effect gaming can have such as overplaying which can have a substantial effect on social skills. Forty nine percent of all people surveyed within this age group agreed they play games of this type much more than they should do.

When we studied the location of where the gamers in this age group preferred to play we saw a substantial change compared to the lower age group with eighty percent playing consoles in their bedrooms, fifty five percent using handhelds and also twenty percent using a PC to game within the privacy of their bedroom. The living room gave results of fifty nine percent playing PC games, forty nine percent playing handheld games and thirty eight percent using a console in their living room. Gaming on the move whilst traveling was a unsurprising result with fifty four percent playing handheld games, three percent using a PC and a lowly one percent using a console on their travels.

The number of gamers using a relative or friends house to fuel their gaming needs saw thirty three percent using handheld games, twenty five percent using a console and just eight percent using a PC to game. At school we found that twenty five percent were using PCs, eighteen percent were using handheld games and just two percent using consoles. The library saw small results of eight percent for PCs and six percent for handheld gaming devices.

Technology owned by gamers in this age group was fairly higher than the younger group with ninety one percent owning a console, eighty eight percent of them owning a mobile phone and eighty percent had a DVD player. Seventy five percent of this age group were in possession of a PC unit with sixty eight percent playing a handheld gaming device frequently. Mp3 players contributed forty percent of the people surveyed with digital cameras providing thirty seven percent of the overall vote.

With the PC still being one of the most popular options available for gamers we looked into the various functions of the units and asked the users why the felt the PC was an important part of their gaming lives. The most popular function desired by this age group was instant messaging software which sixty percent of the people asked would not do without on a regular basis. Downloading music and videos was favoured by forty percent with thirty nine percent claiming storage of digital photographs as their most required function. Watching DVDs was the most sought after for thirty four percent of the people surveyed whilst chat rooms and forums provided twenty seven percent of the vote. Twenty percent of people within this age group looked towards advanced functions like creating their own web pages while eleven percent preferred to share digital music.

Mobile phones and their capabilities have become far more prominent in recent years with the need to communicate being far more essential to young and old people alike. The new generation of mobile phones provides users with a wide range of functions at the touch of a button wherever they may be. Ninety nine percent of mobile users state that sending text messages is the most important function to them with eighty one percent seeing playing games as their main requirement. Forty three percent use their phone to download ringtones whilst thirty nine percent prefer using their phone to play music. MMS messaging constitutes twenty percent of the votes along with nineteen percent who receive text info and visiting WAP sites was seen as most advantageous by fourteen percent.

Gaming frequency of this age group was again not very dissimilar to the younger age group with thirty percent playing handheld games each day, forty eight percent would play handhelds several times per week with twenty two percent playing just a few times a month. Games consoles received forty two percent of gamers playing each day, forty three percent taking part in game play several times per week and just fifteen percent opting to play a few times per month. Thirty two percent of all PC gamers played each day with forty seven percent competing several times per week. Twenty one percent of PC gamers would only wish to use their PC for games on a few occasions per month. Digital television games were much less popular with eleven percent playing each day, ten percent playing between three to six times per week and twenty percent playing several times per week. The amount of gamers who would only enter into digital television gaming a few times per month was fifty nine percent of all counted votes.
